Every year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons compiles a list of statistics from its members. They look at surgical and non surgical procedures, often publicizing the top five procedures of the year in each category (people love top five lists). So, today we’re looking at the top five non surgical cosmetic procedures of the year.
What Are the Top Five Non Surgical Cosmetic Procedures of the Year?
It’s important to differentiate surgical and non surgical procedures when discussing lists like this. In large part that’s because they function so differently, offering wildly different results. Surgical procedures tend to produce permanent results and require a long recovery.
The most popular cosmetic procedures, however, don’t require recovery but tend to produce temporary results. (Of course, that will vary depending on the exact procedure.) The point here is that we can learn some things by looking at the the top five non surgical cosmetic procedures of the year–seeing what people find popular, effective, and trendy. The field of non invasive cosmetic surgery really changes so rapidly that this entire list could change by next year (minus one or two mainstays).
The Top Five
So, this is a list of non invasive cosmetic procedures. These procedures do not require a scalpel of any kind (scalpel-related procedures are tracked on the plastic surgery procedures list). Which means that, usually, we’re talking about injectable-related procedures. But not always. The top five non surgical cosmetic procedures of the year (for 2018) are:
- Botox: The perennial favorite, Botox is one of the most popular procedures on the planet. In 2018 alone, over 7 million Botox procedures were performed. Everything else pales in comparison.
- Dermal fillers: Over 2.6 million dermal filler injections were performed in 2018, which is enough for this procedure to rank second.
- Chemical Peels: The third most popular option is a set of procedure known as chemical peels, at 1.3 million. These peels can rejuvenate and freshen your skin so you look more youthful and rested.
- Laser Hair Removal: Over 1.1 million laser hair removal procedures were performed in 2018, which is enough to put this set of procedures into fourth place.
- Microdermabrasion: This procedure is a way to promote rejuvenation of the skin and includes procedures such as SkinPen. Over 700,000 microdermabrasion procedures were performed in 2018.
There’s a fair amount of variety in these top five procedures. Botox and dermal fillers are generally deployed to fight wrinkles and lines. Other procedures tend to make the face appear more radiant or healthy.
Why Are Non Invasive Procedures Popular?
Botox is orders of magnitude more popular than any invasive plastic surgery procedure on the market today. Breast augmentation is typically performed 300,000 times a year, compared to the 7 million injections of Botox. But what explains that kind of disparity?
Well, there are a couple of factors that help explain the popularity of many of these procedures. First and foremost, results from Botox (and dermal fillers) are temporary. In order to achieve a lasting effect, then, one must undergo multiple treatments a year, depending on how long those treatments last.
Additionally, many Botox and dermal filler treatments have multiple uses. Botox can be used to treat migraines and dermal fillers can be deployed to change the shape of your nose. It all depends on the what the patient wants. It’s this versatility, coupled with the fact that treatments are less expensive and no recovery is involved, that helps to make these non invasive procedures as exceedingly popular as they are.
Giving Patients More Options
The value in these non invasive approaches is that they grant patients a significant number of options to help them achieve the results they want. The more options that patients have, the more likely they are to be able to achieve the results they really want.
In a way, it makes cosmetic and plastic surgery significantly more accessible. And one thing we’ve definitely learned from the top five non surgical cosmetic procedures of the year is that these options simply aren’t going anywhere.
If anything, we expect procedures such as Botox and dermal filler injections to get more and more popular as time goes on. So we feel pretty safe in guessing that, while Botox is number one in 2018, it’ll also be number one in 2019 and beyond.
