In a recent interview about Real Housewives of New Jersey plastic surgery became the topic of conversation. Jacqueline Laurita, star of the Bravo television show, recently sat down with Fox News to talk about her own change of heart when it comes to plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures.
What a Real Housewives of New Jersey Plastic Surgery Can Teach Us
Part of that change of heart comes with the perspective granted by aging. When you’re young, Laurita recalls, it’s difficult to understand the appeal of plastic surgery. “But then when you get older,” she told Fox News, “gravity takes its toll, your boobs start going south and lines form around your face.”
That realization has been shared by a significant number of plastic surgery patients. It’s looking in the mirror and realizing that a part of your body appears older than the rest—appears older than you actually feel. How does that happen? In many ways, this Real Housewives of New Jersey plastic surgery patient is an excellent stand in to describe the appeal of various procedures—especially in the ways that aging changes your body.
What Changes as You Age?
When you’re young, you don’t think about aging in a way that’s accurate. A young person conceptualizes aging as a kind of wrinkle factory. You’ll just get a few wrinkles around your face and your hair will go grey. What’s so bad about that? Aging isn’t so bad, you might think—certainly not enough to warrant plastic surgery.
But that’s not the whole truth. Your body changes in all kinds of ways. For example, you might start to develop excess skin—and that excess skin can hang in ways that are unflattering. That’s true around your face, and it’s also true around other parts of the body.
Areas of the Body that Age (and How to Overcome)
- Breasts: Over time, the breasts tend to droop and sag, changing their orientation. Breasts that were once perky and youthful looking will instead point towards one’s toes. This is a natural part of the aging process (sometimes exacerbated by life events such as pregnancy), but some women can feel as though the breasts age faster than the rest of the body. In these cases a breast lift (sometimes paired with a breast reduction) is a great way to restore the breasts to a more youthful-looking orientation. According to the website of Dr. Tenley Lawton, MD, a breast lift and reduction surgeon in Orange County, CA, these procedures usually take a few weeks to totally recover from. However, both breast lift and breast reductions generate amazing transformations.
- Tummy: One area where excess skin can really take a toll on the “youthfulness” of your body is around the tummy. Extra tissues and skin can build up around that area and there’s not a whole lot you can do about it naturally, using means such as diet and exercise. Part of that is the natural aging process and part of that is what happens in your daily life (again, pregnancy is a major—but not exclusive—culprit). The solution is a surgical procedure known as a tummy tuck, which removes excess skin and makes the belly appear more fit and trim. The skin will be smoother and the abdominal muscles will be a bit sturdier. Tummy tuck is a great way to get rid of persistent excess skin around the belly.
- Eyelids: I know it may sound weird, and technically they are part of the face, but most young people don’t think about how aging around the eyelids is going to affect the way they look as they age. But in point of fact, the eyelids have a way of becoming a kind of focal point for wrinkles, lines, and excess skin. In fact, the excess skin around the eyes can become so extreme that it can start to impair your vision. An eyelid lift (known medically as a blepharoplasty) is one way to remove this excess skin. The bonus is that, when you do, you also eliminate significant lines and wrinkles, making yourself look much more youthful.
Real Housewives and the Real You
Laurita underwent several plastic surgery procedures that were designed to help her appear more youthful. For many plastic surgery patients, certain procedures become interesting because they restore the way you think your body should look. In other words, it feels like certain parts of your body have aged too quickly. A plastic surgery procedure restores the “balance.”
One thing this Real Housewives of New Jersey plastic surgery procedure teaches us is that you can’t always see the effects of aging coming—so it helps to keep an open mind!
