You probably haven’t specifically heard about plastic surgery going green, but turns out it’s been doing that for a while. That’s especially true since the Brazilian Butt Lift became such a popular trend. So how, exactly, is plastic surgery going green? By recycling your fat!
How Does Green Plastic Surgery Happen?
If you think about it, fat that is extracted through a liposuction procedure is treated as biohazard waste. That means it has to be disposed of in a highly deliberate, sanitized fashion. Such a disposal process is both expensive and (probably) not great for the environment. So finding a way to use that fat would certainly be a boon.
Lately, these fat-recycling procedures have been enjoying a high degree of popularity. In part, I think that popularity comes from how “green” they are.
Is BBL a “Green” Surgery Option?
So, just to be entirely clear, these fat graft procedures are universally “green” in one major way only: they recycle your fat. It’s true that individual surgeons may have their own techniques and tricks that enable them to be green in other ways. For example, there may be office supplies that can be recycled or purchased in a way that is more “green.”
However, when it comes to the procedure itself, the idea is this: where a normal liposuction would simply dispose of the unwanted fat, something like a Brazilian Butt Lift will actually use that fat to increase volume elsewhere on the body. The fat is usually cleaned or purified in some way before its injection—either with the use of a centrifuge or washing with special solutions.
The fat is then injected back into the body. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily a procedure that can be scaled up in terms of its “greenness.” What I mean is that only you can benefit from your fat. Surgeons do not currently have the ability to harvest fat from one patient and implant into another on a large scale.
Going Green With Your Own Fat
Which means “going green” in terms of your liposuction procedure is a very personal decision. If you don’t have an immediate need for the fat that’s being removed via liposuction, it could be difficult to “recycle” that fat. And you shouldn’t necessarily feel as though you need to use the fat that’s been removed from your body.
In fact, many people will go into these procedures from the opposite mindset. They want a bigger butt or larger breasts, and a fat graft is an excellent way to do that. In these cases, patients can choose some of the following areas for removing fat:
- Lower Back
- Abdomen (especially around the belly)
In many ways, any place you happen to have excess fat can be used to donate that tissue for your fat graft procedure. It’s also worth noting that, in some cases, you might need some additional body contouring due to liposuction. For example, liposuction of the belly might also be paired with a tummy tuck procedure in order to ensure optimal results.
How Can You Use Your Fat?
Whether you’re going in for a liposuction and want to “recycle” your fat or you have a specific outcome in mind from the start, you certainly have some options in terms of where you want that fat to go. It should be noted, however, that some fat graft procedures are a little unpredictable. Up to 50% of the “transplanted” fat can be reabsorbed into the body.
Unfortunately, you won’t know the precise percentage of fat that’s going to stick around, so predicting the final outcome takes a high degree of experience. You’re definitely going to want to seek out a surgeon who is quite familiar with fat graft procedures.
Once that fat is purified, patients have many options in terms of what to do with it:
- Brazilian Butt Lift: This procedure can inject the purified or cleaned fat into the buttocks ino order to improve the size and roundness of the rear end.
- Breast Augmentation: Fat is quickly becoming one of the leading breast implant options because it looks and feels very natural.
- Facial Rejuvenation: Many patients elect to have the fat injected back into their faces. In some ways this works just as a dermal filler does, eliminating lines and wrinkles by filling volume. This can be used around the mouth, or around the eyes, or anywhere around trouble spots on the face.
- Lip Injections: For patients, getting bigger lips that look and feel natural can be quite a challenge. Lip injections from a fat graft procedure are designed to do precisely that.
Whichever direction you decide to go, it’s nice to know that there are “green” plastic surgery options out there for those who do not want to waste anything! Luckily, green plastic surgery also often means fantastic results.
