Getting Smooth Skin in Time for Summer

Knowing how to get rid of hair for summer can give you some power and motivation. If you prefer the look of smooth skin (in any area of the body), you’ve got several options. The most traditional means to smooth skin is via shaving or waxing. But more and more people are opting for laser hair removal procedures in order to achieve the desired effect.

Even though it’s February, it can feel like warm weather is fast approaching, so you aren’t the only one wondering how to get rid of hair for summer. It’s a little known fact that the human body is actually incredibly hairy. Like, there’s hair everywhere. And that’s true whether you’re a man or a woman.

The Advantage of Knowing How to Get Rid of Hair For Summer

And as you get older, you tend to grow ever-more hair in ever-more places. Both women and men tend to develop facial hair as they get older (it’s just that women tend to groom that facial hair much more rigorously, thanks to certain social conventions). Which means that as you get older, you have a significantly greater surface area to cover with a razor.

Which can be a pain in the neck.

With summer approaching, there’s little choice for many but to start getting smooth again. And know how to get rid of hair for summer in the best way possible can help you stay smooth and save time.

Shaving and Waxing

The two most traditional ways to get rid of hair are shaving and waxing. These should be pretty self explanatory. When you shave, you use a razor to cut the hair so that it’s even with the skin (and feels smooth). The sharper the razor, the better the shave (and even sometimes, you get more blades involved and that helps).

Waxing is a little more complicated. You actually have to put semi-hot wax on your body, and then use a special type of adhesive paper. The wax stick to your hairs, the paper stick to the wax, and when you pull it all up, the hair is removed from the body.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each approach:

  • Shaving tends to be quick and easy, but the results do not last particularly long
  • Shaving can also lead to “razor burn,” which doesn’t look particularly smooth
  • There are also certain areas of the body that are particularly difficult to shave
  • Waxing can lead to longer term results and an overall smoother appearance
  • But waxing is also incredibly time consuming and can be quite painful

It’s really up to the individual what option is going to work best. And, in some cases, it might be a combination of the two. Or maybe you’ll switch off, shaving sometimes and waxing others.

Another Option: Laser Hair Removal

Whether you shave or wax, the operation is cyclical. You’re going to have to do it again at some point because, well, your hair keeps growing. That’s one of the obnoxious things about hair (and, if you’ve ever had a bad haircut, one of the best). When your hair grows back, you’ve got to do it all over again.

Unless you look into one particular option: laser hair removal. Now, this sounds drastic. But it’s actually a relatively simple procedure in which the root of the hair is neutralized, ensuring that the hair itself will never grow back.

There are some caveats that come with laser hair removal, of course:

  • It tends to be relatively expensive (certainly more expensive than shaving or waxing)
  • Laser hair removal tends to work on some hair better than others (check with your medical spa or cosmetic surgeon about whether your hair color will work for this procedure)
  • It can take up to four sessions in order to get your results (that’s because your hair grows in stages–and that’s how many stages most people exhibit)

However, the results are often pretty spectacular. You can smooth and hairless for years without needing to worry about shaving or waxing for quite some time. Whether you end up saving money in the long run will ultimately depend on your personal habits.

You Could Always Stay Hairy

Waxing, shaving, and laser hair removal are all viable options. But so, too, is embracing your hair. Frankly, I think it’s useful to understand that smooth skin is a social convention of beauty–meaning it can always change.

Some people will not feel comfortable with body hair. And that’s okay. But some people will–and that’s okay too. We just have to make sure we have enough room for everybody in this hairy world.

Knowing how to get rid of hair for summer doesn’t mean that you need to do so. But if you want to, you can aim to do so in several different ways.
